The war may begin when Israel strikes “nuclear” objects in Iran. The United States will support the attack. If it happens, the new large-scale war will become inevitable. Iran is not Libya, and not even Iraq.  In addition, anti-Iranian enemies have failed to build the “axis of hatred” around Iran. Therefore, many countries in the region will support Iran either directly or by implication. In particular, it goes about China. Chinese President Hu Jintao stated that if the USA or any other country attacked Iran, China would take responsive measures immediately. As for Moscow, sources at Russia’s Defense Ministry said that the forces in the region had already been mobilized in case of a possible war.

DEBKAfile’s military and intelligence sources report that the rush of Syrian war moves backed by Russia indicates that both believe a Western-Arab force is on the point of invading Syria. They are keeping an eye especially on Turkey which is suspected of having obtained a NATO marine and air umbrella, including the US Sixth Fleet, for military preparations aimed at ousting Bashar Assad, so repeating the operation against Libya’s Muammar Qaddafi.

The diplomatic flurry around Syria was accentuated by US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s arrival in Ankara Friday morning to find Turkish armed forces on war preparedness, and Syrian Vice President Farouk A-Shara’s landing in Moscow for a crisis conference with Russian leaders.

Israeli and Jordanian armed forces declared a state of preparedness Friday, Nov. 25, after the Syrian General Command accused an “armed terrorist” group of an ambush killing 10 airmen including 6 elite pilots on the Homs-Palmyra road Thursday, “with the involvement of foreign parties, the foremost of which is Israel.”

debkafile’s military and intelligence sources report the ambush was another of the major operations against Assad regime’s most sensitive targets executed by the Free Syrian Army this week.

It took place at a point on the highway east of Palmyra on the fringe of the Syrian Desert and close to the Syrian Air Force base at Tiyas.

The official statement aired on Syrian state TV said the attack claimed the lives of six elite pilots, one technical officer and three technical sub-officers of the airbase.

The Arab League called Wednesday for “urgent measures” to protect Syrian civilians in the face of violent repression by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. But lest anyone take that as an echo of the call that legitimized the NATO-led military operation in Libya, the League’s statement also rejected “all foreign intervention” in Syria. Still, signs are growing that Syria’s escalating power struggle is more likely to be be settled by outside forces than by the Syrians themselves.

  • Turkey Looks to Punch Above Its Weight “In a newspaper article last week, Ibrahim Kalin, Erdogan’s foreign policy adviser, argued that the Turkish prime minister was “almost an idol for the Arab masses because he takes them seriously, speaks their language and stands up for justice on a global scale.” Such language, and such ambitions, may well be overdone. Turkey, as Western diplomats and even some Turks argue, could be overplaying its hand.” “(Financial Times-UK)
